Scholarships for Accounting Students- (Free money for accounting college students)-

  • Apply to the PCAOB scholarship -  Under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, monetary penalties imposed by the PCAOB must be used to fund merit scholarships for students in accredited accounting degree programs. The Board has established the PCAOB scholarship program to provide a source of funding to encourage outstanding undergraduate and graduate students to pursue a career in auditing.     • The program is merit-based and students eligible to receive a PCAOB scholarship must:

    • Be enrolled in a bachelor's or master's degree program in accounting at a regionally accredited U.S. college or university;

    • Demonstrate interest and aptitude in accounting and auditing;

    • Demonstrate high ethical standards; and

    • Not be a PCAOB employee or a child or spouse of a PCAOB employee.

  • Apply to the AICPA scholarships- (Over seven (7) scholarships that range from $5K to $12K per year)- some are specifically targeted towards minority students. (https://www.aicpa.org/becomeacpa/scholarships.html)

  • Apply to NYSSCPA scholarships – The purpose of the Excellence in Accounting Scholarship of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA) and its Foundation for Accounting Education (FAE) is to provide financial assistance to encourage and aid deserving candidates to enter the accounting profession. Accordingly, scholarship awards will be based heavily on financial need. At the same time, applicants must meet or exceed a threshold of acceptable academic performance.   • “From Paychecks to Power: 7 Power Moves to Unlock Wealth Building”- Author- Shannaan Dawda. The book teaches practical and actionable financial principles that are Islamic based

  • “9 steps to financial freedom”- Author- Suze Orman- Unlike traditional money management books, 9 Steps approaches money from an emotional and spiritual point of view, emphasizing that fear, shame, and anger are the main obstacles to wealth. 

  • “The Millionaire Next Door: The Surprising Secrets of America's Wealthy”- Author Thomas J. Stanley and William D. Danko - The bestselling The Millionaire Next Door identifies seven common traits that show up again and again among those who have accumulated wealth. Most of the truly wealthy in this country don't live in Beverly Hills or on Park Avenue-they live next door.

  • Management Leadership for Tomorrow- MLT is a non-profit organization committed to helping minority students plan business careers and guide them through college and into an MBA program. MLT will help students with career development, as well as a variety of other necessary skills. Participants are assigned a mentor with similar interests and experiences who can help students select graduate business programs and find full-time employment.   • INROADS- INROADS places talented minority youth in business and industry positions that will prepare them for corporate and community leadership. Participants must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0 throughout the program's duration. INROADS combines two to five summers of work experience - depending on the student's year in school - with year-round academic instruction, training and guidance. Students are assigned a professional mentor and receive a summer salary. In addition, many interns receive job offers from their sponsor company upon college graduation. Companies that have sponsored students in the past include: Ernst & Young, IBM, Merrill Lynch, General Motors, General Electric, Lucent Technologies and Boeing. (https://inroads.org/)

  • Attend career fairs in your area- ask the recruiters not only for a job but advice on what you can do to improve your chances

  •  Sign-up for On-Campus recruiting at the career office in your final year of school (you can only participate in this program once).

  •  Go to the career office- have them review your resume & help you write your resume. They also regularly publish internships and career events. They can help you prepare for interviews and also search for jobs.

  •  Evaluate companies for salary and work culture- GlassDoor.com.
